Greater Milwaukee History

Greater Milwaukee Credit Union was established in 1923 as Milwaukee Federal Employees Credit Union (MFECU) to encourage thrift among its members, create a source of credit at a fair and reasonable rate of interest, and provide an opportunity for its members to improve their economic and social conditions.

For the first 73 years, MFECU was a closed charter credit union serving the employees of the United States Government and the United States Postal Service.

In 1995, the membership voted to expand our charter to a community credit union serving any persons living or working in the counties of Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, or Waukesha.

Shortly thereafter the name was changed to more accurately reflect our new field of membership. On March 31, 1996, MFECU was re-named Greater Milwaukee & Government Employees Credit Union. On January 26, 2005, the credit union was re-named Greater Milwaukee Credit Union.

Today, Greater Milwaukee Credit Union serves the needs of many individuals and companies in the Milwaukee Metro area.  In addition, any employees of the United States Government, United States Postal Service or State of Wisconsin in the following counties may be eligible for membership:  Calument, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Jefferson, Kenosha, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington, Walworth, Waukesha.  Immediate family members are also eligible for membership. 

In addition to our own two offices, members are able to transact business at over 4,000 Credit Union Service Centers in the nation. Locally, there are Service Centers in Brown Deer, Elm Grove, Grafton, Greenfield, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee,  and Waukesha.  For the location closest to you, please go to: http://www.creditunion.net.
